• carolina zanelli workshop

here are some pics from the chicago mosaic school's july workshop, led by italian mosaicist and teacher carolina zanelli. this was a very good workshop, and i found carolina extremely competent, talented, and altogether lovely!!!

    - the first pic is a very quickly put-together collage of the workshop and my fellow participants.
    - next, you can check out the examples of the byzantine method exercise.
    - the last pic shows some examples of our attempts with the modern technique, as taught at the spillimbergo school.

thanks to ruth ann petree for sharing her pics with me... a few of them made a contribution to the collage!

i am out of time for now, but will try to elaborate on each technique, and on the workshop in general, in the next few days.

  • hawaiian rule #...

    ah yes... as promised...

hawaiian rule # 1 - never judge a day by the weather
oh so true... certainly one that i have tried to apply this crazy, soggy spring-into-summer!

hawaiian rule # 4 - speak softly and wear a loud shirt
my husband's fave... he has quite a collection of aloha shirts... even a couple christmas-themed ones...

    stay tuned for more...

  • of rhapsodies, rocks, and other ruminations...

we are working on our second straight day of sun here in tulsa... although it is a bit cloudy right now... i don't know what the forcast is...

the carolina zanelli workshop at the chicago mosaic school was fantastic! carolina is a wonderful teacher, and a very sweet person, as well. i am still working on my photos from the workshop, and will hopefully get them posted later today.

i am a bit in between mosaic projects right now. after returning from the workshop, i have been busy getting my oldest son enrolled in college. he wanted to take a clep test... which he aced... for information systems and computer applications, which will relieve him of some prerequisites, and hopefully count for some credit hours. also, he just got his driver's license... which means that my car insurance more than doubled... ouch! he is now officially a driving, college freshman!

  • no rain - no rainbows

hawaiin rule #10 is no rain - no rainbows. it is starting to feel a bit like hawaii... without the beautiful ocean and mountain view, of course... here in tulsa. maybe more like washington, oregon, or london, perhaps...

yes, it is still raining, though not constantly... very strange behavior. it rains several times throughout the day, and in between, it may be sunny, cloudy, or in the case of this pic... sunny and cloudy and raining!

oh well, good for a rainbow anyway, which will still delight me even at my age! (take a look and see if it doesn't delight you, too)

my favorite hawaiian rule is #5: goals are deceptive: the unaimed arrow never misses.. i will fill you in on the other hawaiin rules in the days to come... (or you could just google them...)

  • lighting and mosaic gold

click on this thumbnail to take a look at these four different photos of my work etude, which show how dramatically the gold changes with the lighting.

the first photo was taken in the photo studio with special lighting. the other 3 show how the work looks hanging on a pale yellow wall, from different perspectives, at the same time of day. you can see how the gold changes just by walking past it!
