| narrative | this is my second piece working with my floating planes. in this piece, i have used 3 different heights. this one went much more smoothly than the first one, and i think i have a grasp of handling the mounting of the planes in a systematic and controlled process. here, the horizontal blue plane is at the lowest level. next, the vertical yellow plane (which is green where is crosses over the blue) is at the middle level. finally, the horizontal red plane (which is orange where is crosses over the yellow) is at the highest level. (the alternate view shows the levels.) i realized on the first piece, mining for gold, that i must give some thought as to the finished weight of the piece. even at a small 10" x 10" | 25cm x 25cm, it is pretty heavy with the cement board, all the smalti, and the mosaiced planes. the wedi board will help with the weight, as would hexite. the glass for the planes is also lighter weight. although i am using vitreous, which is much lighter than smalti and/or gold, i need to get the fundamental elements - the base and the planes - as lightweight as possible. |
