about this series | |
| narrative | music to my eyes: opus in 24kt is a series of works that explores a visual expression of classical music forms. music is a very integral part of my life. i studied piano and trained classically for many years. as a homeshcooler, i felt that music was a vital aspect of my childrens' education. as a result, each of my sons learned to read music and play an instrument. currently, my youngest is very serious about music, and at 16 he still takes piano lessons and is also studying compostition. we have daily discussions about a particular composer or piece of music, it seems. one day, we were talking about key signatures, and my youngest remarked that he felt that some key signatures had certain colors. for example, he feels that the key of d minor has the color of dark green. this conversation got me thinking about music and color, and about a visual expression of music. at about the same time, i was ready to work with the colored gold that i had bought when i was in venice. i wanted the first mosaic to be a study, as i was just getting familiar with the gold. as i began working with the material, the concept for this series was born. musical forms, such as etude, nocturne, prelude, rhapsody, rhondo, sonata, etc. each have a particular attitude, generally displaing certain characteristcs. the mosaics in this series will be inspired by my understanding of these general characteristcs, as well as by my own relationship with specific pieces of music within each form. |
